In September, the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust is organising a long weekend of hiking and camping on a local High Country Station close to some outstanding DOC areas. There are 4 day walks organised and lead by local enthusiasts, 3 nights entertainment and all meals catered for, at a price of $395.

Terry Jones from the Trust has said the following: "there are mountain biking (ebikes welcome) group rides and there will be horse trails. 5-7km days on Friday and Monday with 10-15km days Saturday and Sunday. Opportunities for keen ones to do a bit more or less keen ones to cut things short! It is really a social gathering of keen outdoors folk kicking off the warmer months with a bit of low intensity adventuring and great camp camaraderie. BYO camper, pitch a tent or sleep in the woolshed! Average age 65 but of course there are a few younger ones also."

Rebecca and Iain Durry are the owners of Kawakawa Station located at Ngawi, Cape Palliser which is at the southernmost tip of the North Island. Their three-day walk is one of the Wairarapa’s best-kept secrets and is a bucket-list experience!

The walk is fully catered with different accommodations each night, packs/luggage are transported and the walk provides a good challenge, encompassing different terrain and scenery each day.

Presented by the New Zealand Alpine Club, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to Aotearoa this June.

The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour has something for everyone, as we travel to remote vistas, analyse topical environmental issues, and bring audiences up-close and personal with adrenaline-packed action sports.

We have a special offer for any North Shore Tramping Club members wanting to attend Banff in Auckland at SkyCity Theatre screening throughout June. All the profits from the festival are used by the New Zealand Alpine Club to support recreation and access to Aotearoa’s alpine regions.

For more information head to our event page.

Auckland will be screening the Ruapehu and Tasman Programs as follows:

           Fri 7 June, 6:30pm – Ruapehu Program

           Tues 11 June, 6:30pm – Tasman Program

           Thurs 13 June, 6:30pm – Tasman Program

           Tues 18 June, 6:30pm – Ruapehu Program

           Thurs 20 June, 6:30pm – Ruapehu Program

           Sun 23 June, 5pm – Tasman Program

If we had to summarise each of the programs, we would describe the Ruapehu Program as being ‘death-defying’ and the Tasman Program as ‘personal conviction’. Take your pick…or both!

Use the code bigcorp10 to apply a 10% discount to General Admission tickets. Alternatively, you can directly go to Eventbrite HERE which will automatically apply the discount. There is a limited supply of discount tickets. Please keep this code within North Shore Tramping Club.

If you manage to get a group of 10 people, the 11th person is on us! Just email events@aucklandclimber.org.nz to claim your free ticket (or have any further questions).

We hope to see you there!

We all enjoy our trips and tramps with the club, but these could not happen without the wonderful work of those who plan the trip.

Club member Colin has written a great article here on just what goes into planning a trip and ensuring we are all safe and having a memorable time.

This was Wenderholm Regional Park on May 12th - the club trip was in the most perfect conditions, very calm and chilly 3 degrees and steaming seas driving to our venue.

The amazing steaming seas were at Hatfields Beach, with water temperatures still relatively high at about 17 degrees and air temperature most likely around zero overnight.

We spotted some fairly rare birds in our region too, including a group of wrybills.

They are interesting little creatures as they're the only bird in the world where their beak points to the right.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrybill

Our group of 22 had a good blast around Wenderholm yesterday, taking in Vin's Track heads along Puhoi River, with some beautiful sea views and lovely native bush patches & then into the usual tracks around Wenderholm.

Notably the back track unmaintained "tramping" track at Wenderholm, which is usually wet and soggy, was almost dry!   Dropping down to the opposite river, Waiwera River to take in more views across to where the Thermal Pools used to be.  Then loops of all the other tracks and a pity to see that Wenderholm didn't escape slips during last year's flooding, with one track that's been re-routed.

For those that have been to Wenderholm, you'll remember how stunning the view is from the lookouts, especially the main ones at the top of the old grassy hill top airfield at approximately 156 metres and viewing point over the spit too.

A decent amount of total altitude gain during the day due to the steep ups and downs and distance!  About 12kms total.    And a bit of clowning around hiding one of our clubbies under a pile of London Plane leaves!

Karangahake forest is about to be mined and Government brought new Fast Track development legislation to Parliament on March 8, which will allow for mining or developing consents and permits to be granted quickly.

The Bill gives NO opportunity for iwi, community groups, or experts to have a say on any project that a Minister decides is 'locally, regionally or nationally' significant! Stand up for Karangahake and for our right to defend the environment everywhere!

The Coromandel Watchdog of Hauraki protects the lands, waters and communities of the Coromandel / Hauraki from the toxic gold mining industry.
